Antigua, Guatemala is located about 2 hours west of the Capital and used to be the Capital of Guatemala about 300 years ago. Earthquakes destroyed alot of the city forcing them to move the capital to present day Guatemala City. It served as the cultural, Religious and administrative centre for the Spanish colonial Central America. Therefore the city is styled as old colonial Spanish and filled with much culture and different must do experiences. This is backed up by the UNESCO world heritage site designation back in 1979.

There are many markets to be explored here in Antigua with the main one being the Central market found in the main central park. It’s filled with an abundance of little gifts, textiles and jade jewellery. This spot is more central and the main go to however this means it is filled with tourists and tourist prices.
For a less crowded and possibly cheaper option, try Mercado el Carmen which is generally calmer and better choice.
2. Hobbiténango: A Hidden Gem
For a truly unique and off the beaten path experience, take a trip to Hobbiténango, located just outside of Antigua.
